All India Bar Examination
The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) twice a year for law graduates seeking eligibility to practice as an Advocate in courts across India.
AIBE is an offline (Pen & Paper Based) examination and an open-book exam, where candidates are permitted to carry Bare Acts only (without notes or comments).

- Mode: Offline (Pen & Paper Based)
- Type: Objective / MCQ Based
- Questions: 100 MCQs
- Negative Marking: No negative marking
- Medium: English & Regional Languages (choice to be made during application)
- Attempts: No limit on number of attempts
- Application Process: Completely online
Qualifying Criteria
To qualify the AIBE examination, candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by the Bar Council of India:
- General / OBC: 45% marks
- SC / ST: 40% marks
Result Nature: Pass / Fail only (No Rank / No Marks awarded)
Who Can Apply?
The following candidates are eligible for AIBE:
1. Law Graduates
Candidates who have completed:
- 3-Year LL.B. or 5-Year Integrated Law Course, and
- Graduated from a BCI-recognized university/college (or a college approved by BCI and affiliated with a BCI-recognized university)
Such candidates may apply if they:
- Have not enrolled with any State Bar Council, or
- Were enrolled but have surrendered their enrolment certificate
2. Final Year / Final Semester Law Students
Candidates pursuing the final year/final semester of a qualifying law course may also apply, provided:
- The institution is BCI-recognized / approved, and
- The candidate has no backlogs in previous semesters
Enrolment & Practice Rules
AIBE is conducted post-enrolment with a State Bar Council.
Candidates are first provisionally enrolled as Advocates and thereafter appear for AIBE, with an undertaking that they will qualify the examination within 2 years of enrolment.
Key points:
- A provisionally enrolled Advocate may practice law during this 2-year period.
- Seniority is counted from the date of provisional enrolment.
- Passing AIBE is mandatory to continue practicing as an Advocate in India.
